Aedicule of Sant’Andrea

Once around the first bastion on the left from the gate (the ninth) the wall houses a travertine aedicule, containing the statue of St Andrew, commissioned by Pius IX to commemorate the spot where the relic of the saint’s head was found, stolen in 1848 from St Peter’s Basilica, and rediscovered here about a month later.
