Once past the Ardeatine Bastion, two spans of the outer elevation of the Walls preserve Aurelian masonry with traces of the battlements that later disappeared with the heightening of the walls by Honorius. In the lower part of the first span, the Aurelian curtain wall rests on a 19th century restoration, recognisable by the use of light yellow bricks, the accuracy of the technique and the surface grouting of the mortar beds. In the following span lower down, a large section in reused tuff blocks, with the addition of rows of bricks to level the layers, can be traced back to a medieval restoration.
