Breach of Porta Pia

This stretch of the Walls bears the marks of the historic breach that led to Rome’s annexation to the Italian State. On 20 September 1870, artillery fire opened the way for the bersaglieri assault, capturing the city. The event is commemorated by three marble plaques on the rebuilt wall section and a column topped with a Winged Victory by Giuseppe Guastalla.
