Established in 1947 in the state-owned area formerly known as the “meadows of the Roman people”, it holds the remains of 426 Commonwealth soldiers who were killed during the Second World War, partly on the territory of the city of Rome, partly from the surrounding province, as well as some aviators and soldiers who died in captivity. It is managed and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, an intergovernmental organisation of six independent member states.
