Beneath the painting is the inscription (DOMUS SOCIETATIS PARAFRENIORUM REVERENDISSIMORUM/ S.R.E CARDINALIUM AN. DOM. MDCXIV//) commemorating the adjoining church of Sant’Anna dei Palafrenieri designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola under Pope Pius IV in 1565, commissioned by the Arciconfraterninta dei Parafrenieri. The Archconfraternity, dedicated to St Anne, took care of the papal stables and, in particular, looked after the pope’s personal horse and its harnesses.
