Memorial of 8 September 1943

On 8 September 2011, the honorary column was moved from Piazza di Porta Capena, where it stood, to this position. The monument commemorates the 417 soldiers of various army corps who were killed during the fighting. Among the inscriptions on the wall, the first is a plaque placed by partisans in 1947 commemorating the staunch defence of soldiers and civilians against the “invading Germans”. Below this is a plaque in memory of the victims of terrorism affixed in 1980. A plaque celebrating the Roman women engaged in the three days of heroic resistance dates back to 1990. Finally, an inscription in English recalls the landing of the Allies at Anzio on 4 June 1944. It was dedicated 40 years after the event by the Association of the US-Canadian First Special Service Force.
