The plaque was placed on the Leonine Walls on 7 August 1922 in memory of those killed in the First World War. Engraved on the lower part, on a scroll surmounted by a helmet and flanked by two swords, are some verses by Giosuè Carducci taken from the poem Bicocca di San Giacomo (1891) from the collection Rime e ritmi.
