Posterula [Postern gate]

The arched opening that exists today at the basalt road retraces the site of an ancient posterula or postern door or gate, walled up and then demolished in 1888 in order to extend Via Marmorata, which was never completed. The wall remained demolished probably until 1930, when it was rebuilt to again cordon off the area of the nearby Non-Catholic Cemetery.
