Restoration by Pius VII

The restorations carried out during the pontificate of Pius VII (1800-1823) involved the Chambers architect Giuseppe Valadier, who had been given the following tasks by the Reverend Apostolic Chamber: to ensure that there were no fraudulent encroachments within the walls, to ensure the stability of the fortification by replacing the bricks that had continually been removed by carters for building material, and to eliminate weeds. In order to fill in the existing gaps, mainly bricks recovered from the demolition of old walls and buildings were used.
