Section with Merlons

Immediately after the first tower, five merlons can be seen incorporated into the masonry. They represent the maximum height that the Aurelian Walls reached.  The tuff block structure immediately visible after this corresponds to one of the reinforcement buttresses of the Claudian aqueduct that can be seen all along the route at regular intervals. The top is surmounted by the Felice aqueduct, with its characteristic “bauletto” or truncated crowning. Within the area of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Aurelian walls are hardly distinguishable from the structures of the Claudian and Felice aqueducts.
