The Image Of Divine Love

Inside a small chapel on the walls of the Castro Pretorio, on Viale del Policlinico, is a mosaic figure of the Virgin and Child, flanked by two angels and surmounted by the dove of the Holy Spirit, a copy of the Madonna of Divine Love, now preserved in the sanctuary of the same name. Worship of Our Lady of Divine Love was kindled during the war, when Pope Pius XII invited people to pray for the salvation of the city, which at that time was occupied by Nazi troops: it was 4 June 1944 and on that same date, while vows were being made to the Virgin, the Allies liberated the city. The event rekindled the worship of this sacred image, and in the post-war period, it was displayed in many aedicules, including the one on the walls of the Castro Pretorio, as a sign of thanksgiving and devotion.
