Observing Porta Tiburtina from the exterior, on the left tower we can see two cardinalitial coats of arms from the late 16th century; the first belonging to Antonio Carafa, the second to Alessandro Farnese. Perhaps these two had acquired the rights to collect the duties at Porta Tiburtina.
Other coats of arms that can be seen in this sector are evidence of public works: Felice Peretti’s coat of arms emphasises the construction of the Felice Aqueduct, which runs parallel to the Walls in this section; Nicholas V’s coat of arms commemorates the restoration of the tower facing the break in the modern Via Tiburtina.
