Coat of arms of Pope Paul III Farnese (1468–1549), 1543

The monumental work to fortify the so-called Bastioni di Michelangelo can be traced back to the radical reinforcement of the walls that the Farnese pope commissioned Antonio da Sangallo to carry out in 1537.
A coat of arms similar to this can still be seen on the cantonal of the Ardeatine bastion on the Aurelian Wall.
