Commissioned by the French administration in 1813, when Rome was the Empire’s second capital
and major urban programs were underway. The project involved stabilizing this particularly ruined
section of the Aurelian Walls with a supporting structure consisting of large relieving arches on
pillars, reaching as far as the Muro Torto.
