The only surviving part of the southern section, although extensively restored, is a tower in the garden of the Nuns or Religious Sisters of Zion, visible from Viale XXX Aprile: in 1849, Garibaldi’s troops were entrenched on this tower. With the only cannon available, they tried – unsuccessfully – to stop the overpowering French forces of Commander Oudinot.
