The Fountain of the Cannon Balls, 1925-1927

The fountain of Porta Castello on the Leonine Walls, also known as the “fountain of the cannon balls”, was built in 1927 by architect Pietro Lombardi (1894-1984) and commissioned by the Office of Antiquities and Fine Arts of the Governorate. Originally leaning against the walls, on the interior side, to the right of the Porta Castello archway, following the implementation of Borgo’s urban plan (1936-1950) and the demolition of the buildings leaning against the Passetto, the fountain was dismantled and rebuilt with some modifications in its present location, leaning against the wall of the Istituto Pio IX.
