The restoration by Pope Innocent X and the collapse of 2001

On the evening of 15 April 2001, a portion of the Walls, about 12 metres long, collapsed in the section between Porta San Sebastiano and Via Cristoforo Colombo between the towers.

The collapse mainly affected the brick curtain wall dating to Pope Innocent X Pamphili (1644-1655), precariously attached to the original masonry dating to Aurelius and Honorius. The section of the walkway accessible from the Museo delle Mura was closed to the public and the Capitoline Administration undertook the restoration.

The coat of arms and the inscription, placed in memory of the work carried out by Pope Innocent X and recovered after the collapse, are displayed in the Museum.
