During the demolition of Porta Salaria in 1870, two tombs were found inside its eastern tower. One was built of peperino blocks, the other, from the Domitianic era, with a travertine base and a marble altar relief depicting a toga-clad boy. Inscriptions identified it as the tomb of Quintus Sulpicius Maximus, a child prodigy and poet. The tombs are now visible in the archaeological area at Via Piave and Via Sulpicio Massimo, alongside a small late medieval and Renaissance-style building designed by Gian Giacomo Ferrari (1928–1937).
