Villa Elika

On Via Locri, a multi-story building with a large terrace occupies the triangular space formed by a deep recess in the Walls near the Lateran, blocking the view. In the mid-19th century, the area was leased by Pietro Cardella, a renowned Roman horticulturist. The nursery was later sold to the Del Drago family, dedicating it to Angelica, wife of Prince Ferdinando (1857-1906). The place became known as Villa Elika. In 1929, Baroness Avanzo acquired the property and rebuilt the old house, expanding it. Little remains of this renovation except the impressive five-level complex overlooking the Basilica of San Giovanni and the Aurelian Walls.
